History
The construction of the Stonehouse was truly a labor of love. Franz Kneidinger had a dream when he came to this country from his home in Vienna, Austria. The young man in his early twenties was determined that some day his family would dwell in an English-style country manor. A strong home of stone and timber with classic Tudor design and rich, elegant woodwork. He envisioned the home with an English garden of shrubs and flowers, surrounded by a forest of fruit trees. A peaceful island of tranquility and beauty that would make his family proud and secure.

In 1934 Franz’s dream became reality. The Pennsylvania Railroad was taking down a nearby stone trestle. Franz bought the stone for $100 and with his five sons and two Swedish stonemasons, “Ollie” Olsen and Josef Glass; Franz built his dream house—stone by stone.

Franz Kneidinger’s fine house is now the realization of our dream—to create a first-class restaurant where our guests can relax and savor outstanding food and spirits in an intimate and civilized setting. Every effort has been made to keep the construction of the Stonehouse as authentic and original as possible.
